Prescription Medication News
Canada Considering Curtailing Online Sales
The Associated Press has reported that Canadian health officials are
drafting a proposal to prevent internet pharmacies from selling mail-order
prescription drugs to consumers in the US. This proposal is expected to be
completed by the end of the month, and it is unsure of how long it may
take to gain approval.
Facing rising prescription medication costs,
US consumers searching for
cheaper medicine have been purchasing their prescriptions from
Canadian internet pharmacies. These purchases are often at a substantial savings over what US pharmacies
are charging for the same medication. Unlike the US, medicine prices in
Canada are set by the Canadian government.
US patients have their physician fax a prescription to a Canadian doctor
to approve and fax to a Canadian online pharmacy to fulfill the order. The
Canadian government contends that it is unethical for a doctor to approve
prescriptions without examining a patient.
